PAIN MANAGEMENT CLINIC LICENSING & COMPLIANCE

ARIZONA PAIN MANAGEMENT CLINIC LICENSING

Due to the unprecedented epidemic of prescription drug overdose deaths, states have the primary responsibility to regulate and enforce prescription drug practice. In Arizona, laws are in place to prevent inappropriate prescribing regulation of pain management clinics. To prescribe, dispense or administer controlled substances, physicians must be licensed in Arizona and comply with applicable federal and state regulations. Physicians are referred to the Physicians Manual of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for specific rules governing controlled substances as well as applicable Arizona regulations.

Components of the SB 1001: 2018 AZ Opioid Epidemic Act have gone into effect and more new requirements of this bill are coming in 2019. In April 2018, Arizona physicians are required to do a 5-day limit on initial opioid prescriptions, 90 MMEs per day, new CME requirements (three hours of opioid education) and eliminates the exemption that allows a health professional to not check the CSPMP if prescribing no more than a 5-day supply. Starting in January 2019, prescription order for a Schedule II opioid must be transmitted electronically to the dispensing pharmacy in six of Arizona's largest counties. All other counties begin in July 2019.
